100th Anniversary of the Titanic - a Horological Tribute to a Great Legend

Jon Z. | COMMENTS (0)

While numerous cities solemnly commemorated this important day, and the film industry re-introduced the 1997 blockbuster (now in 3D), a boutique Swiss high-end watch brand Romain Jerome paid tribute to this history-shaking event in its own way - by creating an highly exclusive line called the "Titanic DNA". The original concept was introduced in 2005, but the best models were introduced just one year ago. Issued in a limited edition of 2012 pieces (2012 being the year of the 100th anniversary of the Titanic) for the standard time only model, 500 pieces for the automatic chronograph, and 500 for the solid all 18K rose gold model, the signature feature of these timepieces is an oxidised bezel made of an extraordinary amalgamation of original steel from the hull of the Titanic along with modern shipbuilding steel plate from the Harland &Wolff shipyards where the most luxurious ocean liner was builtalmost a century ago.  read more

RM 056 Felipe Massa Tourbillon Split Second Competition Chronograph Sapphire - Case constructed entirely with sapphire crystal - first time anyone has ever done this. Super cool, however, the few lucky owners needed to be reminded that the sapphire case also tends to be super delicate to wear - unlike metal, once the sapphire crystal gets chipped, there's no way to polish it...  read more

Amazing set of machines valued at over $500,000 each. The only other small brands that I can think of in terms of exquisite mechanical execution of artistic awesomeness, are Christophe Claret, and some of the high end Guy Ellia pieces (which are also represented here on JZ&F)  read more
